Junior Application Engineer (Retail Solutions)
SOLUM Europe GmbH is looking for a Junior Application Engineer to strengthen its Application Engineering department.
The position focuses on L2/L3 technical support for SOLUM’s retail solutions, including Electronic Shelf Labels, digital signage, gateways, wireless infrastructure, software platforms, APIs, databases, and customer-specific integrations.
Working alongside experienced Application Engineers and international development teams, you will investigate technical incidents, analyse system behaviour, reproduce problems, and support the implementation of reliable solutions in customer environments.
The role combines software, hardware, infrastructure, wireless communication, and technical customer support. This reflects the Application Engineering profile described in the provided examples.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide L2/L3 technical support for SOLUM retail solutions after implementation and handover.
- Analyse escalated customer incidents received through the support and ticketing processes.
- Investigate issues across software, hardware, networking, wireless communication, databases, APIs, and cloud or on-premises infrastructure.
- Reproduce reported problems in test and laboratory environments.
- Review application logs, system logs, database records, API responses, and monitoring information.
- Identify root causes and provide technical workarounds or permanent solution recommendations.
- Support troubleshooting of Electronic Shelf Labels, gateways, digital signage, rail solutions, and related infrastructure.
- Coordinate complex incidents with senior engineers, product teams, global R&D, and external partners.
- Document investigation results, technical findings, known issues, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Support software deployments, configuration changes, upgrades, patches, and customer-specific integrations.
- Develop small scripts, queries, or tools to simplify analysis and recurring support activities.
- Contribute to internal knowledge bases, operational documentation, and support best practices.
- Assist with technical testing and validation of new software and hardware releases.
- Participate in customer calls and explain technical findings in a clear and professional manner.
- Escalate critical incidents appropriately and support their resolution under the guidance of experienced engineers.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, electrical engineering, or a comparable technical discipline.
- First practical experience through employment, internships, working-student positions, university projects, or personal technical projects.
- Basic knowledge of software applications, operating systems, networks, databases, and APIs.
- Experience with Linux and common command-line troubleshooting tools.
- Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
- Understanding of REST APIs and client-server architectures.
- Ability to read and interpret application and system logs.
- Structured and analytical approach to technical problem-solving.
- Strong willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies and investigate complex systems.
- Good written and spoken English.
- German language skills sufficient for communication with customers and colleagues in Germany.
- Willingness to occasionally travel to customer locations within Germany or Europe.
Relevant Technical Knowledge
Experience in some of the following areas would be beneficial:
- Linux, Windows Server, Docker, or Kubernetes
- Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages
- PostgreSQL, or other relational databases
