Build the operating system for a new kind of university
At Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences, we are building the University for the Age of AI — a fully remote, state-recognized university designed for the careers of tomorrow.
AI is fundamentally reshaping how we work, what we need to learn, and how education should be delivered. Traditional universities are structurally unable to keep up.
We are solving this by building an AI-native UniversityOS: the core operating system of the university. It runs the student lifecycle from application to graduation and connects learners, programs, competencies, challenges, assessments, feedback, progression, credentials, operations, and AI into one coherent platform.
We are now looking for a Head of Product & Engineering (f/m/x) to take ownership of UniversityOS and turn it into the defining platform for the next generation of education.
This is not a classical edtech product role. It is a builder-operator role at the intersection of product, engineering, academic operations, AI, and systems architecture.
Your mission
Own and evolve UniversityOS, the core platform powering Tomorrow University.
You will inherit existing systems, workflows, and technical debt while leading the transition toward a much more ambitious platform: an AI-native university that delivers personalized, outcome-based education at scale.
This includes both:
- What already exists: learning experience, systems, workflows, internal tools, and legacy infrastructure
- What still needs to be built: AI-native capabilities, scalable architecture, product-led growth, learner personalization, and operational leverage
You will shape how thousands, and eventually hundreds of thousands, of learners experience education.
Your job is to understand the university deeply, simplify complexity, ship fast, and continuously explore where new technology can create leverage.
What you’ll own
Product & Platform Ownership
- Define and execute the roadmap for UniversityOS
- Own the full learner journey — from onboarding to graduation
- Turn the platform into a world-class learning experience
- Own both learner-facing and internal operational tooling
- Improve activation, engagement, retention, completion, learner success, and operational efficiency
University Systems Architecture
- Own the core domain model of the university: learners, programs, competencies, challenges, submissions, assessments, feedback, progression, credentials, and graduation
- Translate academic, operational, learner, and business needs into coherent product systems, data models, workflows, APIs, and user experiences
- Make UniversityOS the system of record for the university
- Turn complex real-world workflows into simple, scalable product experiences for learners, faculty, coaches, and internal teams
AI-Native Product Development
- Lead the evolution from “software used by a university” to an AI-native university platform
- Integrate AI deeply into learning, feedback, personalization, assessment support, content generation, multimodal learning, translation, spaced repetition, and dynamic learning interfaces
- Build systems that enable tutoring-level outcomes at scale
- Design AI systems that are useful, safe, auditable, and aligned with academic integrity
- Balance AI ambition with trust, governance, and explainability
- Lead a small, high-performing engineering team of around 5–7 people
- Ensure high velocity, quality, reliability, and scalability
- Make pragmatic architecture and build-vs-buy decisions
- Write specs, shape architecture, review technical decisions, unblock delivery, and challenge assumptions
- Avoid over-engineering while keeping the platform scalable and maintainable
Product-Led Growth
- Improve activation, engagement, retention, conversion, and completion
- Build features that directly impact learner success and commercial growth
- Use data, user insight, and product intuition to identify leverage points across the learner journey
Build, Migrate & Scale
- Improve existing systems while replacing what no longer scales
- Lead the migration from legacy tools and fragmented workflows into UniversityOS
- Keep the university running while modernizing its core systems
- Stabilize where needed, rebuild where justified, and ship incremental value continuously
Technology Exploration & Strategic Leverage
- Continuously evaluate developments in AI, learning technology, infrastructure, developer tooling, and digital product platforms
- Identify where new technologies can improve learner outcomes, academic quality, operational efficiency, or scalability
- Translate promising opportunities into clear product, technical, or strategic recommendations
- Apply sound judgment to distinguish durable capabilities from short-term hype
- Ensure technology choices are pragmatic, maintainable, and aligned with the university’s long-term direction
Who you are
You are a builder first, leader second.
You combine product thinking with technical depth and enjoy turning ideas into shipped reality.
You may have been a founder, technical product lead, engineering lead, or early-stage product builder.
You are not someone who only manages roadmaps. You have built real products, made trade-offs under pressure, dealt with complex clients or stakeholders, and shipped products without perfect conditions.
You are strong when there is ambiguity, complexity, and no obvious playbook.
You might be a great fit if you:
- Have 5–10 years experience in product, engineering, or both
- Have built and shipped real products end-to-end
- Think in systems, not features
- Can move between strategy, product, architecture, data models, APIs, and execution
- Have founder-like ownership, urgency, and curiosity
- Actively explore new technology and AI, but are not blinded by hype
- Can go deep with engineers and still communicate clearly with non-technical teams
- Know how to ship with a small team
- Make pragmatic decisions under constraints
- Are comfortable replacing legacy systems while keeping the business running
- Enjoy ownership, speed, and ambiguity
- Care about education, learner outcomes, and building something meaningful
What makes this role a great challenge
The hard part is not just building features.
The hard part is understanding how a university actually works, turning that into software, and then using AI to make the model dramatically better.
You will need to balance:
- Speed with academic integrity
- Innovation with compliance
- AI ambition with trust and auditability
- Learner experience with internal operations
- Rebuilding with continuity
- Product quality with small-team constraints
The kind of person we are looking for
We are looking for someone who can operate in a complex, evolving environment and bring structure, clarity, and momentum.
You are able to understand how the university works at a deep level, identify where technology can create meaningful leverage, and translate that into pragmatic product and engineering decisions.
You combine technical curiosity with sound judgment. You actively follow developments in AI, learning technologies, infrastructure, and digital product development, but you evaluate them through the lens of learner outcomes, academic quality, operational scalability, and long-term maintainability.
You bring founder-like ownership without needing a startup-style environment. You are comfortable taking responsibility for ambiguous problems, aligning stakeholders, making trade-offs, and turning strategy into execution.
We are not looking for a pure manager, a ticket dispatcher, or a strategy-only product person.
We are looking for a builder-operator with technical depth, product judgment, and the ability to evolve UniversityOS into the operating system for AI-native higher education.
