as soon as possible
As part of an interdisciplinary research team, you will contribute to research and consulting projects at the interface of water systems, environmental data science and digital technologies.
Starting at KWB, your main mission will lie on the quantification of the urban water balance, i.e. runoff, infiltration and evaporation. In this context you will explore how data, modelling and digital technologies can improve decision making for utilities and municipalities. Depending on your expertise and interests, you will develop and apply innovative approaches ranging from innovative data analysis (such as remote sensing and geospatial data) and physically based modelling (such as RABIMO or SWMM) to machine learning and artificial intelligence.
In the future, your work can extend to other water related topics, including drinking water, sewer and stormwater systems, bathing water management, urban flooding or infrastructure asset management. You will collaborate closely with water utilities, municipalities, research institutions and industrial partners to translate scientific advances into practical solutions.
- Your responsibilities include:
- Contributing to applied research and consulting projects in urban water management, environmental protection and infrastructure resilience.
- Developing innovative methods combining numerical modelling and/or data driven approaches such as machine learning, depending on your expertise and project needs.
- Processing, integrating and analysing heterogeneous datasets with reproducible data analysis workflows, including operational, environmental, geographical and remote sensing data.
- Creating operational applications and decision support tools for municipalities and water utilities by implementing statistical models or predictive models.
- Contributing to proposal writing, project acquisition and the creation of new research ideas and consulting services.
- Collaborating closely with an interdisciplinary and international network of researchers, utilities, municipalities and industrial partners.
Must have
- University degree in Water Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Data Science, Hydrology, Computer Science or a related discipline (Master's degree or PhD).
- We welcome candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Urban water management
- Hydrological or hydrodynamic modelling
- Machine learning or artificial intelligence
- Data science for environmental applications
- Experience programming in Python, R or comparable scientific programming languages.
- Strong analytical and scientific problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within interdisciplinary teams.
- Interest in developing robust and practical digital solutions for water management and urban infrastructure.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
Nice to have
- Experience in project management and business development
- Professional working proficiency in German
- Experience with software development practices is an advantage.
- Join a leading international research and innovation center addressing major challenges in water management, environmental protection, climate adaptation and urban resilience.
- Work on real world challenges in close collaboration with water utilities, municipalities and international research partners. Your work will contribute directly to operational tools and innovative solutions that support better decisions and more sustainable urban infrastructure.
- Become part of an interdisciplinary and international team combining expertise in water engineering, environmental science, data science and digital technologies.
- Benefit from a collaborative and supportive working environment with open communication, short decision making processes and a high level of flexibility and responsibility.
- Expand your expertise through challenging research and consulting projects, international collaborations and tailored professional development opportunities.
