The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.
WIAS invites applications for two
Postdoctoral Research Position (f/m/d) in mathematical statistics
(Ref. 26/10)
in the Research Group "Stochastic Algorithms and Nonparametric Statistics"
to be filled by September 1, 2026.
This position offers the opportunity for independent scientific research aimed at advancing your own academic qualifications. The position is based in the Research Group for Stochastic Algorithms and Nonparametric Statistics.
Key areas of focus:
-
Statistical theory of machine learning methods
-
Stochastic algorithms and stochastic optimization
-
Optimal transport
-
Stochastic analysis with applications to finance
Key Responsibilities:
-
Collaborating with fellow team members on joint research projects and contributing to the publication of high-quality articles in leading statistics journals and top machine learning conferences
-
Actively engaging with the broader Berlin mathematical statistics community by participating in collaborative initiatives, seminars, and networking activities.
-
Presenting research findings at internal seminars as well as at national and international conferences.
-
Acquisition of research funding (e.g. via the Math+ cluster or the DFG)
We are looking for:
While this is a broadly advertised position, we are primarily looking for candidates with a strong track record in mathematical statistics and/or theory of machine learning. Candidates are expected to actively contribute to our scientific collaborations. It is a plus to have knowledge of stochastic analysis and we will give preference to candidates whose research interests align with the research of several members of the research group "Stochastic Algorithms and Nonparametric Statistics" (see this link for details and note that Johannes Schmidt-Hieber and the ERC grant “Extending the mathematics of artificial neural networks to biological neural networks” will be soon integrated within the research group).
What we offer:
-
WIAS Berlin is a premier research institution known for its strength in partial differential equations, mathematical modeling, nonlinear optimization, and applied mathematics in general.
-
Mobile working based in Berlin and in consultation with the head of the research group
-
A certified (Audit berufundfamilie) family-friendly work environment.

Berlin is one of the most culture-rich and diverse international cities in the world. It offers endless opportunities to enjoy life outside work, while being very affordable compared to other major cities. Neither the job nor living in Berlin requires German language (although WIAS offers free German courses). We highly welcome international applications. Scientifically, Berlin offers a rich landscape with numerous opportunities for research, as well as job prospects in academia and industry.
Please direct scientific queries to Dr. Christian Bayer ([email protected]).
Successful candidates will be fully employed (39 hours per week) at WIAS for an initial period of either one or two years. A one-year extension is possible (subject to available funds). The salary is according to the German TVoeD Bund scale.
The Weierstrass Institute is an equal opportunity employer. We explicitly encourage female researchers to apply for the offered position. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.
How to apply:
Please upload your complete application documents (motivation letter, detailed CV, certificates, copy of the PhD thesis, etc.) via our applicant portal using the button “Apply online”.
The application period opens immediately and remains open until the position is filled.
We are looking forward to your application!
