Herbst Umwelttechnik GmbH is a leader in environmental and biogas solutions. As part of AlgoBoost, we are looking for motivated students who enjoy hands-on lab work and want to contribute to innovative solutions in sustainable energy production.
We provide a dedicated workspace – you are welcome to stay beyond your initial placement to continue or pursue your own (academic) work, e.g. thesis.
Position Types Available
– Internship – mandatory or voluntary (3–6 months, aligned with academic requirements)
– Bachelor's or Master's thesis
– Working student position (20–40 hours/week)
Schedule
On-site presence is required Monday to Friday. Working hours are flexible (20–40 hrs/week) and can be adjusted to fit your academic commitments, but attendance on all weekdays is necessary.
Responsibilities
– Operate, maintain, and optimise biogas bioreactors (training and protocols provided)
– Cultivate bacteria under controlled conditions to support biogas production
– Perform basic microscopy (light, phase contrast, etc.) and cell staining techniques
– Analyse and interpret experimental data to optimise bioreactor performance
– Conduct literature reviews to support ongoing research objectives
– Perform routine analyses (e.g. FOS/TAC and others) to ensure proper reactor functionality
Qualifications
– Enrolled as a Bachelor's or Master's student in molecular biology, biotechnology, (environmental) process engineering, or a related field
– Genuine enthusiasm for hands-on lab work – you enjoy working with your hands and don't mind getting stuck in
– Good knowledge of Microsoft Office; strong English language skills (German is a plus)
– Strong interest in anaerobic microbiology and biogas production
– Reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently after training
– A word of warning: biogas research comes with some distinctive smells. If you can handle that with a smile, you'll fit right in!
