About UniWearables
UniWearables is a Berlin-based medical technology startup developing innovative wearable monitoring systems and IoT solutions for healthcare.
Our devices combine medical sensors, embedded electronics, digital signal processing, wireless communication, and cloud connectivity. We work closely with medical and research partners, including Charité Berlin, to develop technologies that can meaningfully improve patient monitoring.
Our young, international team works primarily in English and welcomes students from around the world.
The Position
We are looking for talented and highly motivated Master’s students who want to complete an internship, a Master’s thesis, or a combination of both in the field of embedded systems and medical wearables.
You will work directly on our real medical-device platform, with a particular focus on dsPIC33 microcontroller programming, embedded C, sensor integration, and digital signal processing.
This position requires more than following predefined instructions. We are looking for someone who is creative, enjoys solving difficult technical problems, and is willing to take real responsibility for a development project.
Possible Project Areas
Depending on your experience and academic interests, your work may focus on:
- Embedded firmware development for dsPIC33 microcontrollers
- Programming and optimization in embedded C
- Digital filter design and implementation
- Processing of physiological signals such as ECG, PPG, SpO₂, respiration, and motion
- Development of signal-quality algorithms
- Motion-artifact detection and compensation
- Evaluation of conventional and AI-based signal-processing approaches
- MATLAB/Simulink modelling and simulation
- Sensor integration, testing, and calibration
- Firmware performance and power-consumption optimization
- Development of automated test and data-analysis tools in Python
Responsibilities
- Independently develop and implement an embedded-systems project.
- Program dsPIC33 microcontrollers using C and MPLAB X.
- Design, simulate, implement, and test digital signal-processing algorithms.
- Analyse sensor data using MATLAB, Simulink, or Python.
- Debug firmware and hardware using professional measurement equipment.
- Develop creative solutions to complex technical problems.
- Document your architecture, implementation, experiments, and results.
- Present technical decisions and findings clearly to the engineering team.
- Collaborate closely with our firmware, electronics, mechanical, and clinical-development teams.
- Take ownership of your work and actively contribute ideas.
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills in C.
- Good understanding of microcontrollers and embedded systems.
- Knowledge of digital signal processing and filter design.
- Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, Python, or comparable engineering tools.
- Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills.
- Creativity and the ability to develop your own technical solutions.
- High level of initiative, reliability, and personal responsibility.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Willingness to work hands-on with both hardware and firmware.
- Good English communication skills.
- Located in Berlin or willing to relocate for the entire project period.
