What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Autopilot and Electronics Product Design team. In this role, you'll lead the mechanical design of audio components—including speakers and microphones—to deliver an immersive listening experience and studio-grade sound quality across Tesla's vehicle lineup.
What You'll Do
Partner with audio engineers to define system architecture and develop mechanical implementations
Optimize audio components for acoustic performance, integration, size, mass, and ease of assembly
Lead hands-on modeling and design of mechanical components and assemblies, including plastic, sheet metal, and die-cast parts
Conduct mechanical design analyses: structural, tolerance stack-ups, FEA, and design for assembly (DFA)
Create detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and documentation using CATIA
Support prototype builds, component fabrication, testing, and validation efforts
Develop engineering and reliability test plans, analyze test data, and troubleshoot design issues
Partner with suppliers on DFM feedback and support tooling development and assembly bring-up
Guide designs from prototype through production and deployment
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
5+ years of experience in mechanical design
Experience developing acoustic components or modules
Proficiency in CAD software (3DX CATIA preferred)
Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes
Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) tools (ANSYS preferred)
Track record of taking designs from concept through mass production
Basic understanding of electrical and thermal design fundamentals, including PCBAs and electronics packaging
Strong first-principles problem-solving skills (stress-strain analysis, thermal management, tolerance optimization, cost and mass reduction)
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Comfort working across regions, including occasional international travel
