LAS Veterinarian (all genders)
Pre-clinical Research, Drug Development and Biomarker Discovery
Permanent, part time (min. 20h/week)
The Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) Veterinarian is responsible for overseeing the health, welfare, and humane use of laboratory animals, primarily mice and rats, within a CRO environment. This role ensures compliance with European and German regulatory standards while supporting pre-clinical research activities. The successful candidate will work closely with study directors, technicians, veterinarians, the Animal Welfare Officer (AWO), and quality teams to enable high-quality, ethical, and compliant research.
Responsibilities:

Provide veterinary care and oversight for laboratory animals, primarily mice and rats

Contribute to the cross-site veterinary team and support harmonization of veterinary practices

Support laboratory animal science activities and scientific research programs
-
Discuss animal permit applications and regulatory requirements with scientists

Participate in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Attend and contribute to face-to-face and virtual meetings with colleagues across sites

Collaborate closely with teams responsible for in vivo models as well as pharmacology and toxicology project leaders

Assist in the review of study protocols, study designs, data, and reports

Support the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new techniques, tools, readouts, models, methods, equipment, and platforms

Stay current with scientific developments, new technologies, and best practices in laboratory animal science through continuous education and participation in scientific meetings

Ensure accurate reporting of animal numbers in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements

Assume responsibility for the veterinary pharmacy
Qualifications:
-
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM / Dr. med. vet.); board certification as a Veterinary Laboratory Animal Science specialist (Fachtierarzt für Versuchstierkunde) is highly desirable

Sound knowledge of European and German animal welfare regulations, including Directive 2010/63/EU, the German Animal Welfare Act (TierSchG), and the 3Rs principle

Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Excellent written and spoken German and English language skills
Further ideal qualifications and competencies:

FELASA Category C certification or equivalent is an advantage

Experience working within AAALAC-accredited environments is beneficial

Practical experience with surgical procedures, such as implantations and model induction, is desirable

Scientific mindset with strong analytical skills and awareness of potential sources of bias and error

Strong commitment to continuous learning and knowledge sharing

High level of dedication to animal welfare, ethical research practices, and regulatory compliance

Detail-oriented working style with a focus on quality and accurate documentation
