Join a small, high output team building a product that has never existed before. As our ML Engineer, you will take a working computer vision baseline and turn it into a production system, running on real hardware, in real plants across Europe and Canada.
Lir Labs is building the visual intelligence layer for industrial biology, using continuous, real-time live cell imaging and deep learning to optimise the 2% of global electricity consumed by wastewater aeration. By replacing lagging chemical sensors with live visual data, we prevent costly process failures and eliminate energy waste at scale.
We are looking for a founding engineer for our office in Hannover to own our ML stack from first principles. You will inherit a working computer vision baseline and decide what to keep, what to replace, and what to build next.
As your scope matures, you will extend into the modelling layer that connects vision-derived features to downstream process variables, laying the foundation.
You will work directly with the CTO and have full visibility into technical and commercial decisions from day one.
We prioritize willingness and ability to upskill quickly over existing skills. Motivation to make a difference and deploy fast is essential.
Responsibilities
- Own the computer vision architecture: evaluate the existing baseline, make architectural decisions, and take full accountability for model performance in production
- Build and maintain cloud inference serving live testing sites across Europe
- Design and maintain pipelines that ingest and process live sensor data from industrial installations
- Develop models that translate continuous visual observations into actionable process predictions, working within the constraints of sparse, noisy industrial data
- Structure model outputs as clean, documented inputs for the operator-facing interface
- Collaborate with the founding team to integrate operational observations with model behavior
Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands on ML work, professional, research, or project-based, with at least one deployment of a computer vision system
- Fluent in German and English
- A clear opinion about segmentation architectures and the ability to defend it
- Experience extracting performance from small datasets: augmentation, transfer learning, semi-supervised approaches
- Solid time series modelling skills: feature engineering from sensor data, handling irregular sampling, autocorrelation and non-stationarity
- Sufficient software engineering fundamentals to own cloud infrastructure and data pipelines without dedicated support
Bonus Qualifications
- Background in live cell imaging, medical imaging, industrial sensing, or water industry
- Experience with process optimisation or control systems
- Familiarity with MLOps practices
- Experience with hybrid or grey box modelling approaches
- Demonstrated work recognised in your field
What We Offer
- Flexibility: Hybrid working model with a focus on output, not hours.
- Professional Growth: Direct access to founders and the opportunity to grow into a leadership role as we scale the team and access to upskilling resources.
- Tools for Success: A dedicated budget for the hardware and compute you need to do your best work.
- Health: Benefits package under development, please tell us what matters to you.
