What to Expect
Tesla is accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy. Revolutionary strategies and products were developed within a few years and successfully launched on a large scale. This is only possible through extraordinary speed, innovation and efficiency.
Gigafactory Berlin forms the perfect basis for rolling out Tesla's incredible success story in Europe. The most important pillar for this are our employees. Their passion, motivation and engagement ensure that we achieve our goals. We are looking for you to continue and expand this success story together.
The Role
As an Engineering Technician within the Paint Maintenance team, you are a technical driver of improvement and efficiency. You work closely with the Maintenance Engineering team to identify and realize cost savings, execute equipment modifications, and support small capital projects from concept through commissioning. Beyond project work, you take ownership of optimizing the planned maintenance strategy and actively advance autonomous maintenance — empowering operators to take responsibility for the basic health of their equipment. Your work ensures that the Paint department's assets are maintained safely, cost-effectively, and in full compliance with applicable regulations.
What You'll Do
Engineering Support & Cost Savings
-
Support the Maintenance Engineering team in identifying, evaluating, and implementing cost-saving initiatives related to spare parts, maintenance strategies, consumables, and service contracts within the Paint department.
-
Contribute to equipment change projects — from technical scoping and feasibility assessment through implementation and safety buy-off — ensuring changes are managed in accordance with Tesla's change management process and applicable regulations (BetrSichV, DGUV, CE/Maschinenrichtlinie).
-
Support small new equipment projects, including technical specification, vendor coordination, installation supervision, commissioning, and handover to operations — ensuring machine risk assessments and safety documentation are completed prior to go-live.
-
Collaborate with EHS to ensure that all equipment changes and new installations are reviewed for safety hazards (electrical, mechanical, pressurized systems, pinch points, etc.) and that required documentation (Gefährdungsbeurteilung, Betriebsanweisung) is in place before first use.
-
Maintain and update technical documentation, including equipment specifications, one-line diagrams, and safety-relevant records, reflecting any changes made to existing systems.
Planned Maintenance Optimization
-
Analyze existing planned maintenance (PM) plans for effectiveness, frequency, and cost — identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary downtime, eliminate redundant tasks, and shift from time-based to condition-based maintenance where appropriate.
-
Develop and implement optimized PM strategies in the CMMS (e.g., SAP PM), ensuring task lists, intervals, and resource requirements are accurate and up to date.
-
Track and evaluate PM completion rates, backlog trends, and maintenance KPIs to drive continuous improvement in maintenance execution quality.
-
Standardize maintenance procedures and work instructions to ensure consistent, safe, and efficient task execution across all shifts and teams.
Autonomous Maintenance (AM)
-
Champion the rollout and continuous development of autonomous maintenance within the Paint department — enabling production operators to perform basic equipment care tasks (cleaning, inspection, lubrication, minor adjustments) independently and safely.
-
Develop and maintain AM task lists, visual standards, and operator training materials in close collaboration with production team leads and EHS.
-
Ensure that AM activities are clearly defined, risk-assessed, and that operators are properly qualified and instructed before performing any equipment-related tasks, in line with BetrSichV and Tesla EHS requirements.
-
Monitor AM program effectiveness and drive escalation paths for issues identified by operators that require maintenance or engineering intervention.
Collaboration & Communication
-
Serve as a technical interface between Maintenance, Engineering, Production, and EHS teams.
-
Communicate project status, cost savings progress, and PM optimization results to the Maintenance Manager and Engineering team.
-
Support incident investigations related to equipment failures, contributing to root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
What You'll Bring-
Completed technical degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering, or a comparable field.
-
Practical experience in a manufacturing maintenance environment, ideally in automotive or process industries.
-
Solid understanding of planned maintenance concepts, CMMS systems (e.g., SAP PM), and maintenance KPIs.
-
Familiarity with BetrSichV, DGUV regulations, and German occupational safety requirements for work equipment.
-
Structured, analytical working style with a hands-on mentality and strong problem-solving skills.
-
Proficiency in German (C1+) and working knowledge of English.
Nice-to-Have
-
Experience with TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) methodologies, particularly autonomous maintenance pillars.
-
Background in equipment change management, machine safety (CE conformity, Maschinenrichtlinie 2006/42/EG), or capital project execution.
-
Knowledge of condition based monitoring techniques (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis).
-
Experience in Paint shop or surface treatment environments.
-
Familiarity with Lean/Kaizen methodologies and continuous improvement tools (5S, PDCA, A3).
