Full Professor (W3)
in Experimental Physics
at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences
We are inviting applications for the position of full professor in the area of
experimental physics, to be filled by March 1, 2028. The successful can-
didate is expected to develop and lead an internationally visible research
program in experimental particle physics, with a particular focus on parti-
cle physics at the Precision Frontier. Research activities should address
high-precision experimental investigations of fundamental questions in
particle physics, ranging from tests of the Standard Model to indirect
searches for physics beyond it. The successful candidate will head the I.
Physics Institute B. The Institute is currently involved in the AMS, CMS,
and LHCb experiments. In addition to the advertised professorship, the
Institute comprises a C3 professorship participating in the CMS experi-
ment and a newly established W2 professorship in astroparticle physics
that is currently being filled.
The professorship will play a leading role in shaping experimental particle
physics at RWTH Aachen University. This includes major scientific contri-
butions to ongoing and future large-scale international experiments, as
well as the development of innovative, precision-driven measurement
programs. Relevant research directions may include, but are not limited
to, precision experiments, flavour physics, modern detector technologies,
and advanced data analysis methods.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute decisively to the stra-
tegic development of experimental particle physics at RWTH Aachen Uni-
versity, strengthening its national and international visibility and fostering
collaborations within the faculty, across disciplines, and with national and
international research partners. Interaction with theoretical research and
related activities within the faculty and across other disciplines is encour-
aged.
The professorship includes teaching responsibilities in experimental phys-
ics at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, including central responsibility
for the undergraduate physics laboratory course (Grundpraktikum für
Physiker) and its continuous development. Active engagement in aca-
demic self-governance is expected.
The requirements include a doctoral degree and additional research ex-
perience, such as a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) or
equivalent achievements gained as a university researcher or professor or
in a research position outside academia. Teaching ability and dedication
are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent Ger-
man is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will
be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years.
