The at Helmholtz Munich and the Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are an integrated, multi-disciplinary research unit, which provide bioengineering solutions to urgent societal needs. IBMI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine, and the environment. Comprising 12 inter-disciplinary laboratories and scientists from more than 25 countries, IBMI offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative research and an ideal environment to accelerate your career.
We now seek a highly qualified and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/x) to drive the development of the world’s first portable mid‑infrared optoacoustic sensor (MiROS) for non‑invasive in‑blood biomarker detection.
- Develop data analysis pipelines and signal processing methods for mid-infrared optoacoustic sensing
- Translate raw optoacoustic signals into robust, quantitative biomarker readouts
- Design and implement inference models for non-invasive in-blood biomarker detection
- Define and evaluate performance metrics, and validate results experimentally, including validation using experimental data
- Collaborate closely with engineering and research partners (e.g. KIT) to integrate methods into a portable sensing system
- Contribute to advancing the MiROS technology from prototype to real-world application
- PhD (or MSc with strong experience) in electrical engineering, physics, biomedical engineering, computational science, or a related field
- Strong background in signal processing, data analysis, and statistical modeling
- Programming skills in Python and experience with reproducible workflows
- Experience working with experimental data (e.g. spectroscopy, imaging, sensing technologies)
- Hands-on experimental skills: ability and motivation to work in the lab, run measurement campaigns, and troubleshoot setups during data acquisition
- Good communication skills in English and ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams
Desirable qualifications
- Experience with machine learning methods for regression or signal interpretation
- Familiarity with optoacoustic, ultrasound, or biomedical sensing technologies
- Track record of scientific publications or contributions to applied research projects
If you fulfill all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term of 2 years but may be extended under certain circumstances.
