What You’ll Be Doing
As an OT Applications & Data Engineer at AG Solution Group, you will be responsible for the hands-on implementation, integration, and support of industrial IT and OT data systems for our process manufacturing customers. Working from our regional base near Cologne, you will support a key chemical customer on-site as well as other clients, with a strong focus on real-time data infrastructure, alarm management, and production data flow. The focal points of this position are the following:
- Industrial IT & Data Integration: Implement, configure, and integrate OT/IT systems and data flows, connecting control-layer sources (DCS, PLC, SCADA) to historians, data platforms, and enterprise systems through APIs and standard interfaces.
- AVEVA PI & Historian: Configure, maintain, and extend AVEVA PI (PI Data Archive, Asset Framework, interfaces/connectors) to capture, contextualize, and serve real-time and historical operational data.
- Alarm Management: Support and optimize alarm management systems – e.g. Honeywell Alarm Management (the system currently in use) – including alarm rationalization, classification, and the analysis of alarm performance, critical alarms, and alarm floods.
- Connectivity & Protocols: Set up and troubleshoot industrial connectivity using OPC UA and OPC A&E, including the configuration of tunnelers / wrappers to bridge OT data sources securely and reliably.
- Production Data Flow: Ensure seamless, secure, and well-structured data flow across the industrial IT landscape, transforming raw operational data into meaningful information for operations and decision-making.
- System Support & Troubleshooting: Provide ongoing support for OT/IT applications, troubleshooting issues across networks, software, and data integrations to keep systems running efficiently.
- Collaboration with Teams: Work closely with AG, customer, and partner OT architects, IT teams, and operations to ensure systems are configured correctly, data is integrated properly, and solutions meet operational needs.
- Knowledge Management & Best Practices: Contribute to internal documentation, best practices, and troubleshooting guides, and help continuously improve how we deliver industrial IT and data solutions.
You Will Be Successful in This Role If You:
- Meet and exceed customer requirements, deadlines, and expectations.
- Are a strong IT all-rounder, comfortable across networking, software, and data integration (APIs).
- Can contextualize and integrate real-time data from operational technologies and ensure it flows seamlessly across systems.
- Are comfortable working in dynamic, cross-functional teams and can troubleshoot system issues with effective, timely solutions.
- Continuously develop your skills by learning and applying the latest technologies to solve real-world problems.
Who This Role Is a Great Fit For:
- Hands-on Technicians: You enjoy working directly with systems – installing, configuring, integrating, and supporting them.
- IT All-Rounders: You are equally comfortable with networks, software, and data-integration topics, and you like connecting the dots between them.
- Data Enthusiasts: You find innovative ways to enable data-driven functions, solutions, and analytics across the plant.
- Problem Solvers: You enjoy troubleshooting and resolving technical issues so that OT systems and data flows work seamlessly end-to-end.
- Team Collaborators: You work well with international, cross-functional teams to implement solutions that meet operational requirements.
- Solid experience in industrial IT, operational technology, automation, or data engineering.
- Degree in IT, Engineering, or a related field – or equivalent professional experience.
- Strong IT all-rounder profile covering networking, software, and data integration / APIs.
- Working knowledge of OPC UA and OPC A&E.
- Understanding and overview of DCS environments and the role of tunnelers / wrappers in OT connectivity.
- Base knowledge of alarms and alarm classifications (critical alarms, alarm floods, alarm types).
- Experience with industrial IT / production data flow in a process manufacturing environment.
- Fluent German (native or near-native) and English at B2 level or higher.
- Based in or willing to relocate near Cologne, to be present in the office and at the customer site as needed.
- Legally authorized to work in Germany.
- Hands-on experience with AVEVA PI (PI Data Archive, Asset Framework, interfaces/connectors).
- Experience with alarm management systems, ideally Honeywell Alarm Management.
- Experience working in the chemical, pharma, food & beverage, or energy sectors.
- Familiarity with industry standards and protocols such as ISA-95, IEC 62443, MQTT, or EtherNet/IP.
- Hands-on experience with SCADA, DCS, historians, or MES systems.
- Scripting/programming and relational database (SQL) skills.
- Experience working in global or multicultural project and team environments.
- Desire to grow towards a Solutions Architect profile over time.
- Preferred location: Cologne (Köln) area, Germany.
- Work model: Hybrid – combining AG Solution office presence, customer site visits, and remote work.
- Travel requirements: Mainly regional to customer sites in the Cologne area, with occasional travel within Germany and Europe for company, customer, and event locations.
- Physical requirements: As customer sites are industrial environments, applicants need to: use appropriate PPE; lift moderate loads; walk/stand/climb for extended periods; and navigate industrial structures (stairs, platforms, uneven surfaces) in varying conditions.
