The System Innovation team focuses on innovation projects with national and international partners from industry and academia. The team deals with diverse state of the art topics like Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, RISC-V, Secure communication (wired/wireless) networks, Quantum Computing, etc.
Tasks:
- Support the development, characterization, and documentation of components for cryogenic electronic subsystems.
- Conduct literature research, benchmarking, and data collection in the areas of Quantum Computing, Semiconductor Physics, and circuit design.
- Contribute to technical documentation, test reports, and internal knowledge bases.
- Collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team of physicists and engineers across Hamburg and global NXP research sites.
- Take ownership of smaller sub‑tasks and work packages, ensuring reliable progress and timely delivery.
- Build a SPAD array demonstrator (An example setup is already existing, and parts can be re-used.). This includes:
- PCB schematic design and layout. The PCB includes an NXP chip with an SPAD array, and Arduino microcontroller and small peripherals.
- Software to interface the SPAD array to a PC, using the Arduino microcontroller as an interface.
- Measurement on the demonstrator to verify functionality.
Your Profile
- Enrolled student in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, required to complete a mandatory internship as part of their degree program.
- Prior software development experience gained through university coursework or personal projects.
- Team-oriented, proactive, and capable of working independently, with a strong willingness to autonomously learn about trapped‑ion quantum computing and cryogenic electronics.
- Prior experience in Quantum Computing, Semiconductor Physics, or circuit design whether through university coursework, laboratory courses, or project work is considered an advantage.
- Experience in technical writing, for example through a bachelor’s thesis or relevant project work, is an advantage.
- Open-minded, attentive, curious, and intrinsically motivated to learn.
- Fluent in written and spoken German. Technical documentation will primarily be prepared in German.
