The Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC in Würzburg develops sustainable, chemistry-based materials and processes and transfers them into industrial applications. Fraunhofer ISC is organized into R&D divisions, each comprising several departments. The Heads of Division report directly to the Institute Director and, together with the Institute Director, form the institute’s senior leadership team. Division Materials, is responsible for the development and characterization of functional materials systems. Its portfolio ranges from thin films and coatings to particles and bulk materials such as glass and glass-ceramics, as well as chemical and physical materials analysis.
To strategically and operationally further develop the division, we are seeking an experienced and inspiring leader with a strong background in chemical materials science and its industrial applications. Together with the Heads of Department, you will drive the division’s strategic, economic, and organizational development while providing strong leadership for its continued growth. The strategic direction of the division will be finalized in collaboration with the successful candidate.

- assume overall strategic, financial, and leadership responsibility for Division Materials.
- work closely with the Heads of Department to shape the division’s strategic direction and further develop its portfolio of services in line with emerging market, technology, and research trends.
- lead and develop the Heads of Department and the division’s employees, creating the conditions for scientific excellence, sustainable business success, and effective collaboration.
- be responsible for the division’s budget, resources, and financial performance, while continuously developing its portfolio of services and projects through industrial collaborations, publicly funded research and development projects, and industry-oriented innovation initiatives.
- establish long-term strategic partnerships with industry, academic partners, and public-sector clients, and develop new research, development, and consulting services.
- work closely with the Institute Director and the other Heads of Division to shape the strategic development of Fraunhofer ISC and actively contribute to the institute’s overall success.
What you contribute
- Successfully completed university degree in a scientific or engineering discipline (Master's level or equivalent) such as Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related scientific discipline. As evidence of your professional expertise and qualifications, we expect a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) or an equivalent level of scientific qualification.
- Several years of leadership experience with responsibility for scientific, technical, or industrial organizational units, together with a proven track record in their strategic and organizational development.
- Broad expertise in chemical materials science and its industrial applications, combined with the ability to strategically assess scientific, technological, and market developments. Experience in one or more of the research areas covered by Division Materials is considered an advantage.
- Experience in the strategic development and management of research, development, or technology portfolios, as well as responsibility for complex research, development, or innovation projects—for example, within publicly funded research projects, industrial development programs, or corporate innovation initiatives.
- An entrepreneurial mindset, strategic vision, and the ability to successfully integrate technological, economic, and organizational perspectives.
- An inclusive and decisive leader with outstanding communication skills, a passion for developing people and organizations, excellent English language skills, and excellent German language skills or willingness to learn German.

The regular weekly working time is 39 hours. The position may also be filled on a part-time basis and is initially offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of two years.
