What to Expect
We are looking for an energetic and dedicated Analytical Chemistry Lab Engineer to join a motivated and diverse team of technicians and engineers for our labs and incoming inspection in Battery Cells.
You will use your exceptional people skills to delegate tasks and lead staff in developing one of Tesla’s newest quality teams.
You will also bring cross-functional teams together to efficiently solve complex problems and demonstrate strong collaboration skills. Through your presence, you will bring structure to the team and support and motivate others with your personal commitment.
What You'll Do-
Implement chemical quality control for cell processes/test models to ensure proper detection and outlier rejection criteria.
- Preparation and development of analytical methods for characterization of raw materials and finished products, including elemental analysis (ICP-OES), morphological analysis (SEM), thermal characterization (TGA, DSC), density determination (helium pycnometry, Archimedes method), rheological characterization, and complementary analytical tests.
- Responsible for the chemical analysis laboratory, including organizing maintenance, creating troubleshooting instructions, coordinating with internal and external service personnel, maintaining and creating databases and dashboards
- Perform risk assessment with process engineers for proper documentation of control plan, pfmea/dfmea, ppap, IQC/OQC metrics along with supporting key production metrics to achieve yield, OEE.
- Provide support to cell quality operation on field return cases and necessary reliability tests for validation.
- Develop chemical analytical tools to support daily laboratory operations, including sampling frequency for error rates and required testing criteria to avoid residues/rejects.
- Compile, organize, summarize and communicate test data to engineers
- Identify and troubleshoot test equipment and set up and support laboratory organization and ensure clean working environment

M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science with 1-2+ years of industry experience.
- 2+ years practical experience with advanced analytical techniques (ICP-OES, SEM, TGA, DSC, density determination methods, powder rheological analysis).
- Quality control experience in test/manufacturing environment
- Design of experiments for process optimization
- Demonstrated competence to organize large projects internally and externally across various disciplines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills - ability to break down complex technical topics and deliver visual technical presentations (e.g. PowerPoint) to groups of engineers, scientists, and technicians
- Ability to manipulate and record data into and from databases, ingest and analyze data from manufacturing databases - MySQL, SQL, Python, Tableau
- Ability to keep an overview and proactively improve internal processes
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Good knowledge of English as well as good knowledge of German, both written and spoken
