Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Sr. Metrologist/Measurements Engineer (m/f/d)
Role Summary
The Senior Metrology Engineer will develop, lead, and advance metrology capability at the Corning Technology Center Berlin, supporting the design, prototyping, qualification, and manufacturing of high-precision optical connectivity mechanical systems. This role serves as a subject matter expert for dimensional measurement methods, laboratory operations, measurement-system deployment, and technical decision-making within the Precision Connectivity Design Engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the setup, operation, and continuous improvement of the Metrology Lab at the Corning Technology Center Berlin.
Coordinate day-to-day metrology lab activities, including workload prioritization, backlog follow-up, equipment readiness, calibration, maintenance, vendor support, and safe laboratory practices.
Develop and promote metrology capability within OCS Technology by defining methods, standards, best practices, and technical guidance for dimensional measurement.
Support the qualification, deployment, and standardization of new metrology systems and measurement methods across development and manufacturing environments.
Provide second-level support for deployed measurement systems, including troubleshooting related to measurement methods, system performance, repeatability, data quality, and equipment capability.
Partner with multidisciplinary project teams to design, evaluate, engineer, and build precision connectivity mechanical components for the telecommunications industry, from concept through delivery.
Communicate operational status, metrology metrics, budget needs, technical issues, risks, and improvement opportunities to leadership in a clear and actionable way.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, precision engineering, optical engineering, metrology, or a related technical field.
Significant professional experience in dimensional metrology, precision measurement, mechanical design, product development, manufacturing engineering, or a comparable engineering environment.
Strong understanding of measurement uncertainty, repeatability and reproducibility, gauge capability, calibration principles, and measurement-system analysis.
Experience working with high-precision components, tight tolerances, and engineering drawings in a product development or manufacturing context.
Ability to translate engineering requirements into reliable measurement strategies, inspection plans, and actionable technical recommendations.
Technical Skills
Advanced knowledge of dimensional measurement technologies such as CMM, optical measurement systems, vision systems, surface and form measurement, and precision inspection equipment.
Practical knowledge of GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis, datum strategies, and functional product definition.
Ability to define measurement methods, create inspection routines, analyze measurement data, and identify root causes of measurement variation.
Experience with metrology software, data analysis tools, reporting methods, and structured documentation of measurement results.
Knowledge of laboratory management practices, equipment qualification, calibration processes, maintenance planning, and supplier coordination.
Professional Skills
Strong ownership mindset with the ability to lead technical topics independently and drive them to completion.
Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain complex measurement topics to engineering, manufacturing, quality, and leadership audiences.
Structured problem-solving capability, with a practical approach to troubleshooting, prioritization, and decision-making.
Ability to work effectively in cross-functional and international teams, balancing technical depth with project execution needs.
Continuous-improvement mindset and willingness to build new capabilities, processes, and standards in a growing technical environment.
Excellent English (spoken and written), German language skills is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting optical connectivity, telecommunications, precision mechanical assemblies, or other high-precision product platforms.
Experience introducing new metrology equipment or measurement methods into engineering, laboratory, or manufacturing environments.
Familiarity with international quality and laboratory standards, structured problem-solving methods, and statistical analysis of measurement data.
Experience working in a global matrix organization and collaborating with development, manufacturing, quality, procurement, and external suppliers.
