Microscopy, counting cells, solving challenging questions and identifying hidden pathogens: As a PhD candidate in our veterinary laboratory, you will make an important contribution to rapid diagnostics and, therefore, to providing our animal patients with the best possible care. You will work closely with our veterinarians, stay closely connected to the clinical environment and gain exciting insights into diagnoses and treatment courses. As rapid results are often essential in a clinical setting, you will also keep a cool head in demanding situations.
Working in our laboratory offers you the opportunity to combine your scientific training with direct clinical application. You will gain first-hand insight into the diagnostics of our outpatient and inpatients and can put your existing knowledge from your studies, research and laboratory experience to meaningful use. The position is particularly interesting for PhD candidates who are looking for a varied part-time job closely related to their field alongside their scientific work and who enjoy working with scientific precision while also making a practical contribution to patient care.
Our modern laboratory enables comprehensive and rapid diagnostics around the clock, including at night and on weekends. Many test results are available within just 15 to 30 minutes and can be used immediately for diagnostics, treatment and intensive care.
Our diagnostic spectrum includes, among other things, hematological and clinical chemistry analyses, blood gas and coagulation analyses, urinalyses, as well as rapid tests for infectious diseases and hormone determinations. Another focus is the microscopic examination and assessment of blood, urine and fecal samples, as well as cytological diagnostics of body cavity effusions, fine-needle aspirates and joint aspirates. In particular, intraoperative rapid diagnostics often help enable well-founded treatment decisions to be made promptly.

- You are currently pursuing a PhD or have already started your doctoral project and are looking for a regular position alongside your scientific work.
- You have completed a university degree, for example in Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Human Biology, Pharmacy or a comparable degree program in the natural or life sciences.
- We are particularly pleased to hear from applicants with a specialist focus in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Infection Biology, Molecular Biology, Pathology or a related diagnostic field.
- Ideally, you have initial practical experience in laboratory work, microscopy, sample processing or medical or veterinary diagnostics.
- You are interested in veterinary diagnostics and enjoy combining scientific questions with practical laboratory work.
- You work carefully, precisely and responsibly and are able to remain focused even when handling a high volume of samples.
- You would like to apply your scientific knowledge in a clinical setting while gaining insight into practical veterinary diagnostics.
- Good German skills are an advantage, but are not a prerequisite. Very good English skills at C1 level are equally welcome for this position.
- You are looking for a long-term, reliably plannable part-time position that can be combined well with your PhD.
- Analysis of a wide range of samples from our outpatient and inpatient patients
- Preparation, processing and documentation of patient samples for in-house diagnostics
- Microscopy: differential blood count including staining, ear cytology and urine sediment examination
- Support with specialized examinations such as body cavity effusion analysis, synovial fluid analysis and platelet assessment
- Performing and documenting laboratory tests as well as operating and maintaining the relevant laboratory equipment
- Supporting the assessment of laboratory results and the preparation of diagnostic findings
- Collaboration with and shipment of samples to external laboratories (IDEXX, Antech, Laboklin and others)
- Ordering of consumables and laboratory supplies
- Billing of examinations and external services in Vetera
- Close collaboration with our medical team
- Communication with pet owners and referring veterinarians
It is important to us that your working day can be planned reliably. Our laboratory is therefore organized in such a way that overtime is generally not required. Should overtime nevertheless arise, it will of course be compensated with time off. Electronic time tracking ensures transparency and reliable documentation of your working hours.
The position can be filled on a part-time basis with 12 to 30 hours per week. If you are interested in additionally working in one of our other departments and can combine this with your PhD, we would also be happy to employ you on a full-time basis.
If you would like to support us four days per week, you can take on more responsible tasks in our laboratory, as these require a greater time commitment as well as a certain level of routine in the workflows.
The position is particularly suitable for PhD candidates who would like to combine their scientific work with practical employment. Through close collaboration with our medical team, you will gain direct insight into the clinical application of laboratory findings and can complement your scientific knowledge with practical experience in veterinary diagnostics.
Your working hours will be distributed evenly between early and late shifts. Early shifts start at 7:30 a.m., while late shifts end at 8:00 p.m. In addition, you will work at least one weekend per month from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Compensation is based on the agreed working hours and follows our remuneration structure for comparable positions. Please include your salary expectations in your cover letter.
