About Lir Labs
We are building AI-powered microscopy that gives industries real-time visibility into biological processes - automated eyes that detect microscopic details, predict system failures, and optimise treatment in minutes instead of days. As a clean-tech and impact focused startup, Lir Labs is currency focussing on biological wastewater treatment (swallows more than 2% of global electricity and has an enormous greenhouse gas emissions impact) as a target process. Born out of Imperial College London and backed by Antler and the Future Greentech Incubator in Lower Saxony, we are an early-stage venture with pilots already running in Belgium and upcoming in Germany.
About The Role
As our Founding Full Stack Engineer, you will build the software platform that turns our hardware and ML outputs into something operators actually use. You will own the architecture end-to-end: from backend services and data pipelines to the operator-facing interface, with the cloud and integration layer connecting it all together.
This is a software-first role. You will design and build MVPs fast, make real architectural decisions with no legacy code to work around, and shape the foundation of our product as the company scales. Occasionally, you will travel to pilot sites to see the software running in the real world, understand how operators actually use it, and bring that insight directly back into what you build next.
Lir Labs operates out of London and Hannover. This role is hybrid, with occasional travel to our Hannover office and to pilot sites across Germany.
Your Responsibilities
- Design and build the Lir software platform end-to-end: backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and the operator-facing interface
- Connect hardware and ML outputs to customer systems, turning raw model outputs into something operators can act on
- Build MVPs fast: ship functional, well-structured software quickly, then iterate based on real feedback
- Own cloud infrastructure and deployment, ensuring the platform is reliable, scalable, and secure as we move from pilots to production
- Apply foundational cybersecurity practices to protect data and systems operating in critical infrastructure environments
- Occasionally travel to pilot sites to support deployments, troubleshoot integration issues, and see firsthand how operators use the platform
- Translate field and operator feedback into clear technical requirements that shape the product roadmap
What You Bring
- 2+ years as a full stack or backend-leaning software engineer with a track record of shipping real systems
- Strong backend fundamentals: API design, databases, cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Comfortable building a functional frontend or dashboard when needed (you don't need to be a design specialist, but you can ship a usable interface)
- Working knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals: secure data transfer, authentication, network basics
- Resourceful and comfortable owning ambiguous problems independently
- Fluent in German and English (occasionally work with plant operators and their IT teams)
- Open to occasional travel to Hannover and pilot sites
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience with IoT, sensor data, or hardware connectivity
- Familiarity with industrial protocols (OPC-UA, Modbus, MQTT) or SCADA systems
- Experience in wastewater, water technology, or environmental engineering
- Familiarity with MLOps or deploying ML models in production
What We Offer
- Salary: €50–55K (fixed, based on experience) + equity options
- Flexibility: hybrid working model, based in Munich with regular travel to our Hannover base and pilot sites
- Ownership: full architectural ownership of our software platform from day one, with a clear path to leading software product development as we scale
- Professional Growth: direct access to the founding team and the opportunity to grow into a technical leadership role
- Tools: a dedicated budget for the hardware, software, and compute you need to do your best work
- Health & Wellbeing: we want you to be the best version of yourself, let us know what perks matter to you
