Job-Type: Full Time ( 8 hours per day between 0700 -1630, 5 days a week (with the potential for one weekend day per month during the same hours. Monthly scheduled are published on the 15th of the prior month)
Position Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician performs a full range of clinical laboratory testing — including chemistry, cytology, molecular biology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank services — in support of patient care and infectious disease surveillance at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. This role also encompasses molecular biology and PCR-based diagnostic testing, quality control/quality management compliance, and disease surveillance reporting.

As the Laboratory Technician, you shall participate in patient testing and reporting, assist in quality control/management requirements, assist in reporting and administrative requirements, training and tracing requirements, and specimen tracking.

Degree: Certificate
-
Education: Graduate of a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or an educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Certification: Certification/registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or AMT, as specified in the Task Order (TO).

Experience: Knowledge of standard and molecular laboratory techniques and concepts in traditional and molecular infectious disease testing, or demonstrated work experience as a clinical laboratory technician for at least 2 of the last 5 years.

Additional Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS).

Board Certification: None required if holding current ASCP or AMT certification.

Technical Competency: Expertise in molecular biology, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and advanced infectious disease diagnostics.
THE DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

Perform a full range of clinical laboratory tests in one or a combination of the following sections: chemistry, cytology, molecular biology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank, as outlined in the TO.

Determine the suitability of specimens for analysis; prepare specimens and ensure the physiologic state of properties is maintained.

Prepare reagents and primary reference materials as necessary; calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments; verify correct instrument operation through established procedures and quality control checks; identify causes of common problems and make simple repairs.

Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction; locate and implement corrections; obtain analytical data, convert to prescribed reporting units, and correlate data to verify results.

Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products; maintain proper records for quality control and quality assurance reporting.

Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for mail-out.

Prepare biological waste for proper disposal.

Perform patient testing duties, including specimen processing; nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and detection (PCR-based techniques); real-time PCR; DNA sequencing; and other microbiological, viral, and molecular methods, including detection of influenza viruses, gastrointestinal pathogens and toxins, hemorrhagic fever viruses, and emerging respiratory viruses affecting patient disposition.

Report patient test results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); ensure all work documents are accurate and complete; maintain records for a minimum of two years.

Comply with and participate in all Quality Control/Quality Management protocols, including procedures for testing and equipment used, SOP review and compliance, and required training, ongoing education, and safety requirements.

Participate in result certification and report generation; review and modify SOPs as required by the supervisor or designee; maintain and submit a weekly epidemiological report of surveillance testing results to Public Health Command/GEIS representatives; assist with research related to disease surveillance.

Complete all technical, MTF, and unit-specific training requirements.

Participate in training for outlying clinics as required; track related expenditures for renewable cost projections; review weekly resulting trends for submission to preventive medicine and host nation officials as needed; maintain and submit specimen surveys.

Coordinate specimen submission from outlying clinics on a weekly basis; ensure specimen surveys are completed and included with specimens; ensure testing results are regularly submitted to and received by participating clinics.

Perform additional laboratory, quality control/quality management, and disease surveillance tasks as assigned, within the scope of a regular laboratory technician.
Administrative & Compliance Requirements

Ensure comliance with U.S. requirements set by the college of American Pathologist (CAP), the Joint Commission (TJC), and the Clinical Laboratory Imprevement Amendments (CLIA)

Maintain 100% compliance with CAP proficiency testing and OSHA/German safety laws.

Complete all LIS data entry accurately per facility standards.
