European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.
Recent advances at the European XFEL have led to lasing in a cavity-based X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO). This milestone opens new opportunities for X-ray generation and high-precision experiments. To advance the XFELO program to the next level, we are seeking a highly motivated Precision Mechanics Design Engineer to support a joint team of engineers and scientists from European XFEL and DESY.
For our Mechanical Engineering group we are looking for an

- Take responsibility for the production and procurement of mechanical components, as well as for the assembly, testing, and installation of the designed mechanical systems
- Participate in shift work in the control room during experimental testing and commissioning of XFELO mechanical systems with beam
- Analyze technical experimental data, document results, and contribute to publications, internal reports, and technical notes.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics, or an equivalent discipline
- Initial experience in mechanical design, preferably in a scientific, research, or other high-technology environment
- Understanding of mechanism design, structural mechanics, and thermal aspects relevant to precision mechanical systems; familiarity with UHV requirements is an advantage
- Ability to understand technical requirements, develop design concepts, and propose feasible mechanical solutions
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, combined with creativity, motivation, and a hands-on approach
- Experience with 3D CAD modeling and the preparation of engineering drawings; experience with Siemens NX would be beneficial
